In 2014, Matthew Walsh and Helen Fish from Tameside created the Beatstream service, allowing artists and venues to stream live performances across the country. Since its launch, music enthusiasts have been able to enjoy concerts and discover new artists through their smartphones. Soon after the project began, legendary Manchester musician and DJ Clint Boon from the band “Inspiral Carpets” joined Matthew Walsh and Helen Fish, becoming a director of the streaming platform.

The idea for such a platform arose from a prevalent issue of the time: the inaccessibility of live music for fans unable to attend concerts physically. The creators’ primary mission was to provide an opportunity to experience the magic of live music from anywhere.

What set “Beatstream” apart from other streaming services was its focus on exclusive live performances rather than traditional audio streaming. Fans from across the country could purchase tickets to exclusive shows, leave tips or donations, and watch their favourite artists live. This not only made concerts more accessible but also boosted the income of the artists.

The Role of “Beatstream” During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Since its inception in 2014, “Beatstream” has not only been an innovative and technological product but also a vital tool for supporting the British music community. Its revenue-sharing model allows venues, artists, and promoters to retain a significant portion of the earnings, proving invaluable for the live music industry during challenging periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

By the 2020s, “Beatstream” broadcasts have reached over 50,000 listeners in various countries, building a loyal international audience. Moreover, the platform continues to evolve, aiming to expand its reach and diversify its genres, ensuring live music remains accessible to all.
